Visiting the tortoises was a special treat for us. I love turtles of all kinds, but these guys are my overall favorite. They are so serene. We should all learn to slow down and enjoy what you have before you, no matter how big or small.

They are endangered, mostly because of us. They were used as a portable food source for whalers and other seafarers in the early 19th century. There used to be over 200,000, but today they are at 20,000 and four species are extinct.

Find out how you can help to conserve the Galapagos by visiting the Galapagos Conservancy.
